Why did this mask fail?

Review

Video Transcript Thanks for joining us today. We are testing every single mask on Amazon. And when I say every single mask on Amazon, I mean every single one. It's a lot of fricking masks, and we're not even close to being through. So in this video, we will be reviewing the Lutema disposable face masks. Now, I actually know these guys. They're legit American manufacturers. So this is a legit American-made mask. Let's see how it does.

So you can find this on Amazon. This one is going for... It was on sale for 21.17, which is a weird price, from $25. And this one is their black mask. So let's go ahead and test this guy. Actually let's do like this. So these guys are made in California, I believe. Let's go ahead and start it. We're using a PFE machine, particulate filtration. If you want to learn more about this machine, I'll put a link below. But basically we're shooting 0.1 micron latex particles through this mask, and this machine is using an optical counter to see how many get through. So let's talk about the packaging. So really nicely packaged here. I like that they have a solid piece of plastic.

So I love the mask design. They have a full tang nose wire. It's great there. The one thing, and I got to give them a little bit of crap for this, they are putting the welds on the inside and that's not good. And the reason why it's not good is when you put this on, it's getting a little bit of a gap if you do it that way. Now the way they're doing this it's actually not so bad, but it's better if the ear loops are affixed on the outside of the mask because it pulls much better. So that's how these masks are designed to be made. They did that I think for aesthetic reasons and personally I don't like to trade aesthetics for the way something looks.

Let's do the ear loop test. Here, this one's for you, [Horacio 00:02:10] We'll do this. Oh, that's great. So that's good. We got to try that, the smell test though. This is actually surprising to me because this thing has not been on a boat, but it's got a little bit of a smell. It's definitely not terrible. When you range like the smells, and I would say it's in the realm of the new iPhone smell, or something like that. Which isn't something that I love, but it's also not bad. A lot of these masks that we found on Amazon are just atrocious.

But the question is, how well did it do? Now these are making claims. They've got a lot of claims on this box and a lot of little letters. In this one they're not saying a lot specifically, but on the listing it says ASTM level three. Now, this machine is designed to do the ASTM level three test. Well, one through three. And ASTM level three means that it has to have a 98% filtration. And so they're claiming on their website... Or, on the listing, they have an ASTM level three listing. So do they have it? 98.3%. 98.33, actually. So that's a really great test. This is a great mask. And it's for $21. I would feel comfortable buying this mask. I don't like, again, the thickness of this, but knowing everything I know about masks, this is a really good mask.

Well, I hope you guys have found this helpful and not too rambling. I know around Horacio likes to go and on and on, and honestly it can be a little much. But it would really help me if you guys could like and subscribe so that you guys can see more of these types of videos. So we can really just justify the cost of the expense and the time to do all this. I appreciate you guys watching and I will see you at the next test.

Description

The Lutema level 3 disposable mask passed our particulate filtration efficiency machine test with a score of 98.33%. This 3-ply surgical mask has ear loops vs. head straps.

Mask breathability is determined by airflow resistance, which we measure in pascals. The target for adults should be around 150, and the target for children should be close to 100. The airflow resistance of this mask is 110.

This mask has a detectable, but inoffensive odor. We didn't care for the thickness of the material, but the filtration and breathability won us over.

We found this mask on Amazon. Its country of origin is the USA. Check out our video review for more details.
