Why did this mask fail?

Review

Video Transcript Hey, everyone. Welcome back to the place we were testing every single mask in the world. That's right. Today, we are looking at masks from India. A lot of different stuff, excited to look at the Filtra brand of masks today.

Let's put it in the clamp machine. Let's do this. Let's do this. Come on, clamping. Sometimes I swear my fingers are shrinking. Let her rip, oh, ah-ah. This is a PFE machine, Particulate Filtration Efficiency machine. If you want to find out what that is, check out the link. We are just testing the fabric here. We're not testing the fit. Both fit and filtration are important but not everyone has my face. I don't think it'd be fair to test everything on my face with the fit. Your mileage is going to vary on that. Let's talk about Filtra aka Thea-Tex. Thea-Tex is the name of the company that makes it. They make the Filtra.

They make a lot of masks like air pollution, particulate respirators, surgical masks, a lot of stuff. I'm assuming they've been doing this for a long time. I don't know about the company that much. Thea-Tex Healthcare, India, Private Limited. Looking on their website, they have a 3-ply and a 4-ply. This is the 3-ply, type one and type two. Let's look at the box real quick. It's not soft touch but I like the box. As we've seen in some of these videos, actually the better their packaging, a lot of times it does compare with how good the actual product is itself. This is made in India. Yeah, there they have it. 99% BFE but that is a... BFE is useless because bacteria's so large. This is made in India. This seems to be a really big company. There are lot codes and everything on there.

When you open it up, you know I don't love this, it's not sealed at all and so depending on what this has been shipped in, which is coming from India, long, long trip to get here, may not have the best. I love that they're putting their logo on there. That's a good sign. If you see someone go on there, that means they're probably going to be standing by the product a little bit more. The nose wire is a double nose wire. We use the same one, very awesome. It's a great quality. They're doing almost a full tangle. It goes almost all the way across. That's a really good product. They're using a design developed in Taiwan. That means the ear loops are probably going to be pretty awesome because what happens is instead of just point welding, which they're also doing, geez, they're folding over the end and welding it.

It's going to make for a pretty strong ear loop. Let's try that, typically. Oh, come on guys. It's good design though. Okay. That was good. Yeah. I don't know. I'll go 50-50 on the ear loops. I mean, if I give it any tug at all, it's going to come off. I was barely going to tug. I think that in that case, if I'm... Okay, I don't think it's going to come off on your face, so that's good. Nose wire's great. The smell, I'm going to call this smell an Amazon-packaged, delivered by your neighbor three weeks late. Delivered to them, they're like, "Oh, it's Lloyd again. Why do they keep sending it to the wrong house?" Then they put it just right before you go outside their door, and they meant to take it over but they've been busy. It's been there for three weeks. A little bit of a weird smell. Not too terrible.

Mostly smells like a box is my point. All right, so does any of that matter if it doesn't protect you? Let's check the machine. Right, not bad. Not bad. In fact, so far in India, this is the best mask we've tested. 96.084, 96.084. Pretty good. Pretty good. Type two doesn't really specify for PFE. I can't really call them out on that. They are saying 98% on there. I do feel like it's misleading because you're going to think, "Oh, well, clearly, that's going to protect the 98%." But come on. We're convincing... What is it called? We're splitting hairs here is what we're doing. I like to look for ASTM level one or ASTM level two or three.

Personally, I would go two or three. That's going to give you 98% or better. That's the American standard. The European standard is a little bit weirder but this is a pretty good mask. I'd give it to them. Thank you guys at Filtra, Thea-Tex. You made a pretty good mask. All right, hope you guys enjoyed this and I will catch you on the next test.

Description

The Filtra mask passed our particulate filtration efficiency machine test with a score of 96.08%. This blue surgical mask has ear loops instead of head straps or ties.

Mask breathability is determined by airflow resistance, which we measure in pascals. The target for adults should be around 150, and the target for children should be close to 100. The airflow resistance of this mask is 70.36.

This mask has a slight cardboard box odor, but it's well-designed and well-constructed. A stronger level of filtration is preferable though.

We found this mask on Amazon. Its country of origin is India. Check out our video review for more details.
