Why did this mask fail?

Video Transcript Hey, everyone. Welcome back, where we are testing every single mask on Amazon and today we are testing all of the American made masks and I'm very excited to see how it's being done in America. Aside from outside the old arm rest factory here.

Very excited to test the SDS Blocker mask or the essential worker's mask. Yeah. These guys have an amazing story, which I am very excited to tell you about as soon as I clamp this in the machine. So we're going to do that first. This is a black on black mask, and something is very interesting about how they made this mask, is they made the outer layer very thick and the inner layer very thin.
Let it rip. This is a PFE machine, particular filtration efficiency machine. If you want to find out what we're doing here, check out the link.

All right. Let's talk about SDS Blocker. Not sure what that means, kind of a weird name. And then on the box it says the essential workers mask, which if you read their backstory, is really cool. So, these guys decided at the top of the pandemic, it's a group called Third Coast Hospitality. Basically they were a bunch of restaurant owners. They say that they had a 100,000 square feet of unusable restaurant space in Chicago and hundreds of employees that they were going to have to lay off and rather than laying them off, they converted the back room, as you could see right here, of the Old Crow Smokehouse in Chicago, into a place that make masks. That's so cool.

And I imagine they're selling barbecue now and not doing much of the mask making anymore, but you can still buy the mask on Amazon. So $9.99, looks like it's been heavily discounted, which makes sense, probably have a lot of inventory left. If you want to support these guys, they have a great story. Check out them, check out their website, SDS Blocker USA and support them. I mean, I would, I think it's really awesome.

I love their box, they put a lot of care into this, full color, not soft touch, but given that American flag on the back, that's nice. Let's open it up here. Now it's not sealed on the inside, which I don't love, but it is a good quality box and, I don't think these guys were playing on making masks forever so I'm not going to be too critical of that.

What's interesting is in the listing, they actually said 50gsm non-woven material, enhanced, enhanced, enhanced, enhanced, weird flex. That is something that's very specific to mask making, you would have to know about fabric, that's the thickness of the fabric. The back is 25gsm. Typically, the layers are 25gsm. They did an extra dark layer or extra thick layer and that's so that they could give that full black appearance. What I do like about that and I don't think it's going to affect breathability that much, is that it tells you which side to wear it, because you're going to want to wear it on the darker side. So, there's a lot of little things that as a mask manufacturer, I could nitpick over, like the folds aren't perfect, that there is a bit of a design flaw where they had the ear loops on the back instead of on the front and when you do that, what happens is it gives them more of a gap because they design the mask to be here.

You can fix that by buying this mask and just wearing it, what they would consider backwards, and where you can kind of see it's not the full black and you're going to get a better seal, see? Because, it's pulling against it. Your mileage may vary there.

I'm not going to be, again, too nitpicky because their story is just so cool and what they did was so amazing to help keep their employees going and to provide this lifesaving stuff at the time I think it's awesome. But from a mask nerd perspective, it could be improved.

All right, I'm going to take a deep breath here. All right this smells like very, yeah. Okay. So, this smells like the plastic on new electronics. But to be specific, it's kind of like you're moving and for some reason they didn't buy your washer and dryer. You how everyone's always a like, "Yeah, that conveys." Well, in this case they didn't like your Samsung dryer so you're pushing it, putting it on the U-Haul and then you notice that you never pulled that plastic stuff off and it's there and you take a whiff, that's what this smells like. All right.

Oh, I forgot the ear loops, let's do the ear loops. I'm thinking, oh okay, I'm going to give that a five. Look it's easier to break than I'd like to see. I mean, I could do a break dance, break dance, break dance. That's what break dancing is right? I don't think it's going to break on your face though. I don't think it's going to break on your face, I'm going to get that five out of 10.

Not going to hold up a fat baby, but it will probably not break on your face. All right. Now, does any of that matter though, if it doesn't protect you and that's the whole point of what we're doing here. So, service says, wow, nice work, great mission, great timing, great efficiency, 97.904. 97.904, you know what I bet? I bet if they test this thing again and again, they'd be able to get above 98.
And if you're above 98 that put you in the magic of an ASTM level two or an ASTM level three mask, so that's great. Wow, what a great mask, a great mission, great price. You know what I would, I'm actually... I bought one and I might buy a couple more just to support these guys. I think what they did is great.

All right, thank you so much for watching. I appreciate it. If you like what you saw here, I would love a like or subscribe, if you're feeling extra generous today, I would love that tip. I was trying to make like a restaurant worker joke. It didn't really play out though. All right, see you next time.

Description

The SDS Blocker disposable mask passed our particulate filtration efficiency machine test with a score of 97.90%. The 3-ply surgical mask has ear loops instead of head straps or ties.

Mask breathability is determined by airflow resistance, which we measure in pascals. The target for adults should be around 150, and the target for children should be close to 100. The airflow resistance of this mask is 86.92.

This mask has a slight plastic smell. While the benchmark tests were great, the construction isn't the best we've seen. Check out our video for interesting details on how this mask came to be.

We found this mask on Amazon. Its country of origin is the USA.
