Why did this mask fail?

Review

Video Transcript Hey everyone. Thanks for joining us once again, where we are testing every single mask on Amazon. And today we're doing something special. We are testing all of the American made masks. So first up for the day is Hero Life Sciences, sciences. It's smaller. So I'm just saying it quietly. All right. Let's test this thing. Got the clamp cam. It's a minor ad for Ben Bridges here. There we go. It's good clamp. And let it rip.

This is a PFE machine, particulate filtration efficiency machine. You want to find out more about this, putting a link there for you. All right, Hero Life Sciences. These are one of the classic guys that responded to the pandemic. Thank you so much. You can check out their website. It is herolifesciences.life, lots of life in there. Made in USA, shipped from California. I think it's also made in California. These are one of the guys that again, responded during the crisis, set up shop. This bag is... you know, I don't love the bag. We did get this on Amazon and very sort of no claims being made on here, which I like. It is fog resistant. Not sure what that means, but you know, pretty good listing, great price, 9.99. Can't beat that.

But the bag leaves a little bit to be desired. The reason why is like smells can leak in here. So I'm wondering if that's going to be an issue. The other thing, and I'm just going to point this out, FDA registered. This is a red flag for me. If I see this, I'm like number one, because this is the FDA's old logo and Hey, I'm with you here, Life. I like the old logo better too, but that's not accurate. And number two, the FDA specifically says you cannot put their logo on your packaging. Number three, masks are not registered, they're cleared. So probably just a mistake in the packaging. And sometimes you send these things to Amazon and then they deliver them. And so maybe this is just an old stock, who knows?

So the airflow resistance or the breathability is 74, 73.5, which is really good. And yeah, let's see, let's let's open this guy up and take a look. So another thing, I don't like seeing the actual nose wire through here, so from a construction standpoint, I'd give him a little bit of a ding. I want this to be fully folded over and it's gotten pretty wrinkly because it's been in the bag. Your loops are really small. So I'm going to guess that when we do the loop test just going to... Oh, that was good. Yeah, okay. Let's do a couple more. These types of ear loops don't typically last very long. I don't think it's going to break on your face though, so I'm going to give it five out of 10 for the ear loop, because if I'm being gentle here, I don't think that's going to break. It is really large, which is kind of weird. It's a good nose wire. Man, this is like so big, look at this. See that gap? That's a really large mask, but I don't think it's going to break if you... So let me give five out of 10 on that.

All right, smell test. Oh, I'm going to call this a slightly moldy kitchen. I've got a mold smell in here. I'm going to guess it's not the fault of Hero Life Sciences, but probably the bag that they chose to use. That's the problem is you put these things, if it sits in an Amazon warehouse for a while, maybe it was next to some moldy grapefruit, you know, a lot of moldy grapefruit being sold on Amazon. So it's probably what's going on there. No, I blame the bag, but still I don't like it. I'd probably give that a 10 out of 25, because it's just not a small I'd like to see. All right. But does any of that stuff matter? Does it matter at all if it doesn't protect you? That's what this machine is meant to test, so let's check it out. Bam. That's good, 96.47%. So that's a really great score.

What I love about this company is they didn't make any claims. They say this it's not a medical device, they're not saying it's an ASTM level one mask, even though it is, it's meeting the minimum standards for ASTM level one, at least from a particular filtration stand endpoint. So that's great. Like this is a good mask because this mask, according to this machine would actually protect you. So great job, guys, responding to the crisis and making something that is a quality mask. All right. Thank you guys for watching. If you like this, you know me, I'd love likes. I love subscribes. Like every night before I go to bed, if I don't have at least 47 likes, I can't sleep, can't sleep. So help my insomnia and give me a like. All right, I will check you on the next test.

Description

The Hero Life disposable mask passed our particulate filtration efficiency machine test with a score of 96.47%. This 3-ply surgical mask has ear loops instead of head straps or ties.

Mask breathability is determined by airflow resistance, which we measure in pascals. The target for adults should be around 150, and the target for children should be close to 100. The airflow resistance of this mask is 69.10.

This mask has a slightly moldy odor, perhaps from something in the Amazon warehouse permeating through their plastic packaging. Good breathability, OK construction, small ear loops, no real warning signs.

We found this mask on Amazon. Its country of origin is the USA. Check out our video review for more details.

They made a new listing on Amazon of their masks in white color instead of the regular blue color reviewed in the video at the time. I also found out that they replaced the masks from blue to white due to customer preference, but still have some blue masks in their inventory if the customer requests for it after I spoke with a customer rep. at their direct website.
