Why did this mask fail?

Review

Video Transcript All right, guys. Thanks for joining today where we are testing every single mask on Amazon. And it turns out there's a lot. We're not even, we haven't even put a dent in it yet. Starting to wonder if this was a good idea.

Today, we are testing this disposable protective mask and very confusing, because the box seems very boring, but on the inside you're going to find, ooh, leopard print. That's going to be interesting, but does it protect you? We're going to find out.

All right, let's drop this in so we can get it going and see what ends up happening here. You got your side?

Yep.

All right. Now one of the things that we talked before, the reason why I don't love these pattern masks is I really think that with masking, you have to balance safety versus fashion. Fashion's important. I really do believe that. Oh, that's weird. Very stiff. Wow. That thing smells like... I'm going to have to come up with a smell later. That is really bad. So it's... Oh God, that is, I'm going to die from whatever is inside of this mask. This is... Wow. Do people just buy these things and, "Yeah, that's okay."

So just from a technical standpoint, the mask is designed to be on the outside the ear loop weld so that it pulls and has a nice seal. If you look at [Horacio's 00:01:29] here, you see all that weld on the outside gives a nice pull on the outside, where this is leaving more of a gap in there. We're going to get to the smell later, because that thing was horrible. And I forgot to hit start, so we'll do that.

So we're testing the machine with a particulate filtration efficiency machine. If you're interested in how this machine works, there's a link below that you can check that out. But basically we're trying to see to the American standards, how well does this mask stand up for protecting you? And then, I'm just going to comment about the mask because that's what I do. So this is pretty good. I'm not giving it too much force, I feel it breaking a little bit. Yeah. So I would say that's pretty good. There's been... That wasn't good though. Here, you give it a go. Let's try it here. Let's try some of these.

That one went right away. That one's good. So I'd say you're going to put these on your face and some of them are going to break. Breathability on this is 105, which is a little on the high side. Still good, still good. You want it to be under 150 Pa for breathability and that's pretty good. Again, the construction, I don't like the way they do that. The reason the breathability is a little worse than a lot of the masks we've seen is because you have to use an extra thick layer on the outside to get a solid print.

So to meet any standard in the US, you have to have a minimum filtration of 95%. What do you think these guys are at?

The bad boys are probably sitting there at 88.

88. Actually, 96.7. 96.74. The breathability is a little off, but that makes sense because it's a pattern mask. It's going to be less breathable. I mean, man, that's a great filtration. I could not wear this thing personally because of the smell, but I'm a fan of the filtration.

All right, guys. Thank you for watching. I appreciate it. If you got anything out of this mask, if you're buying these masks because they have a 96% filtration, 97 plus round-up, 97% filtration, and you didn't know that before I told you or you're not buying them because they smell like (beep), give us a like, give us a subscribe. I'd appreciate it and make my mom very proud. We'll see you in the next test. Thanks guys.

Description

The DaDade disposable mask passed our particulate filtration efficiency machine test with a score of 96.74%. This 3-ply leopard-print surgical mask has ear loops instead of head straps or ties.

Mask breathability is determined by airflow resistance, which we measure in pascals. The target for adults should be around 150, and the target for children should be close to 100. The airflow resistance of this mask is 105.

This mask has a strong and horrible smell. The breathability isn't bad, but it's hampered a bit by the leopard-print material. The construction of this mask ensures a nice seal, but the toxic smell makes this something we can't recommend.

We found this mask on Amazon. Its country of origin is China. Check out our video review for more details.
